- Here’s the flyer for the third edition of the Guateque Festival held in September 1996.
El Guateque fue el primer Festival DIY de Rock Latino en EEUU. Sí en el 1996 vinó el Wateke y en los 2010s el Uateke y etc, etc, etc. pero el Guateque organizado por el Club Rock en Español fue el primero en usar el nombre de Guateque in the U.S. ever! Oh, and there’s a court case that validates this assertion. ???????????????
The completely independent and self-financed annual fest was created, and produced, and led by an all-female committee that thorough the years included Yvonne (Gómez) Drazan, Alma Díaz, Flora Tapia, Lizzy Garibay, Mariluz González, Yamily Escalante among other enterprising women.
El Guateque tuvo tres ediciones y contó como sede los predios de la ex-cárcel de Lincoln Heights. Each festival gathered more than a thousand attendees and featured most of the active Rock Angelino bands of the early 1990s such as María Fatal, Cábula, Los Olvidados, Las 15 Letras, Juana La Loca (Pastilla), Voz De Mano, Motita, Verdadera Fe among others. The Guateques also included bands such as Yeska and Ozomatli that would soon become the ambassadors of the multi-ethnic L.A. music scene.
Baja California bands such as Penumbra, Mexican Jumpin’ Frijoles, Bodhisattva, and others were part of one of the festival line-ups. In addition, emerging US Latino ska acts such as Skarnales (Houston) and King Changó did their first ever SoCal presentations at the Guateque.
These festivals also featured booths for immigrant rights organizations such as El Rescate and CHIRLA and the Chiapas Support Committee signaling the festival’s commitment towards social justice causes. In addition to being massive autonomous youth gatherings for Latina/o music at a rather hostile time for Latinas/os (1994-1996) The Guateque festivals can be understood as liberatory moments where LÁ youth reclaimed the infamous site, a former jail by and for Latina/o autonomous cultural expressions.
