- So, I funny thing happened during the 1990s as white flight compelled many white families to move out of formerly white neighborhoods to go reside further into suburbia or the Exburbs. During this demographic flux, a club known as the heaven for hair bands of glam metal almost overnight transformed into a quebradita and norteño join in North Hollywood.
That was the case of FM Station a venue known as the Valley’s glam-rock headquarters lost its leased in 1997 and subsequently became Salón Corona, a Mexican regional joint that was popular with the growing ethnic Mexican population that moved in North Hollywood and the east part of the San Fernando Valley.
The location on Victory and Lankershim was actually FM station second location as it relocated in 1980 from its original location in 1974 at the present site of the Viper Club in West Hollywood.
According to rockero lore, Moises Baqueiro was looking around for a place to host tocadas in the Valley and went in almost by chance to Salón Corona. Inside he found bellas meseritas and plenty of peeps dressed to the nines in full norteño attire.
Yet, he also found a perfectly functional stage completed with 1980s lights and an ageing, but still functional full-pro sound system, more apt for rock concerts than for banda baile,s that was very rather under-utilized by the norteño and conjuntos that played at Salón Corona. Moises and his secuaces, hicieron un trato con el dueño de programar bandas de rock los jueves brough in the peeps from Al Borde and that’s how the Al Borde Thursday nights began and lasted for a couple of years in North Hollywood. While the 21 and over policy and the events being on a school night put a damper in the turnout, most Rock Angelino bands played these shows in addition to out of town rock en español acts such as Cielo Cenize (SF), Emaue (San Diego), Fulano de tal (Miami), and even Bersuit from Argentina performed there too. This is a flyer from a 2000 september show there. FYI: Salón Corona, was renamed Hacienda Corona and it seems that it ended up closing its doors in 2015.
