- Continuing with the discussion of Lynwood's our House, here's a repost of the map included in a February 2001 flyer so peeps could locate the spot. The map likely created by the Our House collaborators, is intended to a younger, predominantly Latina/o/x teenage audience that would be the anticipated attendees to these shows, although there were not exclusively for Latina/o/x audiences, yet these were demographic majority in South East L.A. high schools by the early 2000s. By 2000 Lynwood's population was 82% of Latina/o/x descent, while the about 13% of residents were African Americans.
In addition, the simplicity, but exactitude of the map assumes that the viewers would already be familiar with Lynwood as there are only two thoroughfares listed: Atlantic Boulevard and the 105 Freeway.
The map does signal the public transportation options to arrive to the venue, this as most teenagers going to Our House did not yet own a car, or due to their age they would not yet have a permit to drive. The A/B Lynwood (known officially as “The Breeze”) trolley, The Blue Line light rail, and the MTA Bus Line. The first one is decisively limited to trips around Lynwood.
Conversely, working-class resident of Lynwood and other cities in South East L.A. has long rode on the Blue and Green Lines and the bus to travel to worksites and schools beyond SELA. For instance, the 260 line runs from Compton, travels right through much of South East L.A. into bougie spots such as San Marino, South Pasadena, Pasadena and ends in Altadena. Hence, this map alludes to the lived realities of mobility and immobility of working-class folks due to access or lack of access to transportation.
