Here’s a photo of La Resistencia with Luis in vocals performing inside the former Self-Help Graphics building on César Chávez and Gage in 2007. Luis who continues to be part of the band even when displaced from LÁ due to the so-called laws that artificially separate us across borders. These years 2007/08 were the time that ska as a genre moved from the inside of venues and buildings to the outside and the open spaces such as the Self-Help Graphics parking lot, Plaza de la Raza, myriad of backyards, and of course the massive MacArthur Park summer concerts. This was due to the massification and popularity of ska, but perhaps there were other factors to consider. Sooo, la pregunta es: what other factors would have contributed to ska becoming a genre to be played and experienced in Southern California’s public space(s)? Btw, La Resistencia, Viernes 13, and Gabriel Penka perform this evening at the MacArthur Park for free (elotes not included) but you already knew that!
