- This is a photo from the attendees (sitting down!) at an early 1990s music festival at the Old Jail in Lincoln Heights with the Buena Vista Hill in Elysian Park as a background. The photo was taken by Yvonne Drazan who said that the event was either produced or promoted by Illegal Interns.
Does this ring a bell @illegal06 & @flaviocafe ?
The yard at the old jail would eventually be used by Yvonne and the Club Rock en Español for their own DIY Rock Latino music festival: El Guateque (1995-1997). It’s important to note how Latinas/os transformed the site for it be the site of transnational, multi-lingual youth cultural expression. This as the former jail had a long and fraught history of abuse towards Mexican American in L.A. The jail gained a shameful reputation as the detention center where pachucos were incarcerated during the Zoot Suit Riots. Furthermore, in 1951 a group of prisoners (most of them Mexican Americans) were severally beaten without provocation by LAPD officers in an incident known as “Bloody Christmas.” These events were fictionalized in the 1990s novel and film L.A. Confidential.
