- This IG account is about LÁ Latina/o/x Youth Culture, but ultimately is about celebrating the people of Los Ángeles. So today, it’s a sad day when LÁ loses Jonathan Gold, so soon and so unexpectedly. As a food critic, he was instrumental in changing the paradigm into what we consider “great cuisine,” from just French food (bland AF) to opening it to the flavors of Oaxaca, Jalisco, El Salvador, Thailand, India, Ethiopia, Morocco and other nations where strong picante spices make everything much tastier.
Most significantly, J.Gold is one of Los Ángeles most accomplished chroniclers and accomplices of the city, who in his writings, highlighted and recognized the labor, the beauty, and the dignity that entire families put/pour into cooking and serving the most exquisite dishes from the Global South (Latin America, Asia, Africa). Jonathan Gold, the ex-punk, and hip-hop chronicler was also keen in recognizing that the unheralded people who arduously work in the kitchens of the city, are the same women and men who throughout its history, have time and time again, given Los Angeles its own flavor and essence. J.Gold will be missed. #jonathangold #losangeles
