First let’s take a trip down La Pacific in Huntington Park. This to consider the Youth Cultures long history in South East Los Angeles. In 1983 at the apex of the SoCal Punk, a little up-and-coming production company called Goldenvoice (founded by Gary Tovar and Youth Brigade drummer Mark Stern) began to book punk shows at the Mediola Ballroom on Pacific Boulevard. The Mendiola Ballroom had long been an event venue during H.P. time as a white working-class city and its shift into a Latina/o community. By the early 1980s the ballroomhosted quinceañeras, wedding and also got into the radar of the @goldenvoice founders who in early 1983 booked such seminal bands as Misfits, Venice’s own Suicidal Tendencies and of course Youth Brigade. However, The Mendiola’s time as a punk venue would come to a rather furious halt. Why? How? You’ll find out in the upcoming posts.
