Here’s a batch of South East L.A. backyard flyers for metal/punk/ska gigs that took place in spots in Maywood, Cudahy, and Vernon in 1998-2000. These gigs featured bands such as Souless, Rotten, Exhuast. Sorpsion, Broke. The more ska/punk oriented gig included Double Agent, Los Resongones, Los Mal Educados, The Vultures, Alpha Omega, The Spics, Masside and Social Infect. According to Rob López (who was the drummer for Souless) the shows were organized by Souless guitarist, Cesar Rossignoli. These shows were done in backyard due to the scarcity of venues in the area. Yet, they not only risked being shut down by the cops, but also by local gangs. Yet, these endured. Check out the detailed hand-drawn maps in these flyers! As previous postings of this account have discussed, backyard gigs are what I consider “ephemeral forums.” These are informal, temporary and unpredictable social space where to have fun with your squad but at times are spaces of many more possibilities. Particularly in South East LA, these shows have functioned as meeting spaces that facilitated the creation of social networks and the sharing music, fashion, and ideas of between Latina/o youth of different nationalities and citizenship statuses. But more on that later. Do you recognize these bands? What do you remember about your own time at the backyard gigs? Share! Thanks to @lootpack88 for sharing these flyers that are a piece of SELA music history! #backyardshows #backyardgigs #southeastlosangeles #SELA #maywood #cudahy #vernon #Souless #Rotten #Exhuast #Sorpsion #Broke. #DoubleAgent #LosResongones #LosMalEducados #TheVultures #AlphaOmega #Masside #the Spics #SocialInfect. #metal #deathmetal #punk #ska #2000 #rockarchivoLA
