- Gathering, analyzing, and sharing these fragments of history contained in flyers and corresponding with many of you who share your ephemera is quite motivating and illuminating. Now writing the captions to make them interesting is the most challenging part of the archival effort. Particularly in these days that we have to confront the cruel and fascist tendencies of el pelos de elote that affects us all, particularly us Latinas/os.
We don’t have the justice system on our side. We don’t have institutional power. We don’t have millions of dollars or the presidency for sure. BUT, we have each other and we have our stories, and we’re going to keep telling them.
Now with that as an urgent point of inspiration, here’s a flyer for Big Top Locos II (1995). The “Todos Somos Rockeros!” phrase was sure inspired by the slogan of EZLN supporters of Todos Somos Marcos and Todos Somos Todo that shied away from leaders and instead favored the collective voice & action.
This second edition of BTL was also produced by Culture Clash. However, the line-up printed here was a bit too much of a hook as it lists Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Suicidal Tendencies! But when one reads it carefully, this is actually a list of bands where the Trulio Disgracias members performed.
Also, the VGS were a last-minute cancellation. The final line-up included Las Victimas del Dr. Cerebro, the aforementioned Trulio Disgracias (which was a sort of Fishbone side project), Youth Brigade, Todos Tus Muertos, Tijuana No! Los Olvidados, and Yeska.
This festival was part of the countless actions organized in the wake of Prop. 187 and the EZLN uprising in Southern California, that sprung up in Los Ángeles to counter the xenophobic and racist policies imposed in California and the repressive government in Mexico. Definitely check out all the interesting text in the flyer: “Party in the Pit Cabrones!” “All Ages, All Races, All Welcome, All Marcos!” This flyer was kindly shared by Guadalupe Rosales the brain behind @map_pointz and @veteranas_and_rucas as y’all know she’s done some amazing work in recovering, archiving, and re-centering the multifaceted 90s Latinx Youth Cultures.
Many Thanks!
