For decades the California State University, Los Angeles Campus (Cal State L.A. for the homies) has been a very significant site for the REE and other Latina/o music genres. This due to its location in Greater Los Angeles and that it has historically been a higher education with the highest population on Latina/o students (faculty-wise it’s another story…). For instance, following students protests and demands, CSULA established first Chicana/o Studies Department in the nation in 1968. Hence, Cinco de Mayo has been usually been celebrated at CSULA in novel and radical ways. Here’s a flyer of the 2000 CSULA 5 de Mayo Celebration, which featured a ska-heavy line-up: Las 15 Letras (three of their members attended CSULA), Left Alone, Chencha Berrinches & Tokadiscos (Ensenada). Video coming soon. #skafest #ska #rockangelino #rocklatino #rockenespañol #ska #mexska #mexicanska #latinoska #losangeles #losangelescounty #2000 #5demayo #reclaimcinco #chenchaberrinches #leftalone #tokadiscos #las15letras #csula #calstatela #rockarchivoLA
