- Founded by the Venezuelan power couple Alicia Monsalve and Edgardo Ochoa in 1997, Al Borde was a pioneer publication that exclusively covered the genre known as Rock en Español, which is really an umbrella term for Latina/o-Latin American Contemporary Music. Pero bueno.
Al Borde published Biweekly and until the late 2000s, Al Borde was the most distributed and accessible rock en español/youth culture publication in Southern California as it was often found in newspaper racks as Al Borde became part of El Clasificado family of publications in the mid 2000s.
Al Borde coverage also placed emphasis on Southern California artists. For many emerging bands, gracing the cover of Al Borde became a sort of “we made it” ritual. Here are some Al Border covers featuring: Los Abandoned (2006), María Fatal, Curanderos, and Pastilla. Plus, Ozomatli who appeared not once, but twice! (2003 & 2007).
