- Here’s another flyer and event created by Laleña V. with CSULA MEChA or M.E.X.A as it was called during the late 1990s. This as Chicana/o began to be spelled as Xicana/o bcs…reasons? Ok, that part I’ll skip, but the event was a benefit to raise funds to hold the Xicana/o Youth Empowerment Conference. While it was a CSULA benefit it was held at the nearby-ish Old Lincoln Heights Old Jail, which then housed the Aztlán Cultural Arts Foundation.
These were liberatory events, that symbolically and physically reclaimed this infamous site by Latina/o Youth for their own autonomous cultural expressions. Particularly as the jail had a long and fraught history of abuse towards Mexican American in L.A. The jail gained a shameful reputation as the detention center where pachucos were incarcerated during the Zoot Suit Riots. Furthermore, in 1951 a group of prisoners (most of them Mexican Americans) were severally beaten without provocation by LAPD officers in an incident known as “Bloody Christmas.” Now check out this solid line-up! Los Olvidados, Union 13, Lado Izquierdo, Left Alone, Siete Gatos Negros, Crash Logic. All for $5 bucks! Lastly, check out that the flyer was faxed, yes, faxed from The Chicana/o Latina/o Student Resource Center (CLSRC) was founded due to students demands in 1993, and which is now part of CSULA’s Cross Cultural Centers.
