- Soooo, today marks the first anniversary of this IG account and this quote about is quite fitting to the experience so far. Gathering, selecting, writing, talking, engaging with you all about the near past of these many different Latina/o, Latinx, Latiné (your pick, really) youth scene has been an enriching learning experience.
At its most basic level, what I seek to do by creating this shared, crowd-sourced online archive is to re-evaluate our participation in these shows, bands, places, spaces, mitotes, etc. It is immensely significant that we, every-day, ordinary people have created some very exciting, fun, original, at times transgressive, but very much our own thing. Most times with almost nothing in terms of capital, we have created a lot! Lots of places to hang out, lots of music, and yes, also lots of memories.
In learning and understanding the numerous music scenes, places, bands, participants of the past we also get to understand our contemporary presence. We discover how we have re-shaped Los Ángeles, at times only briefly, in others in much more enduring ways. Most significantly, we can feel empowered as we realize that we have also created continual connections with Latin America and beyond. How we as a collective, have redefined the meaning of “Latino music.” We study history, not to relive the past, but because we are interested in learning from the past to create a better future. ¡Y ahora que suene la banda! JK, but it’s request week, so shoot and tell which flyer, photo you’d like to see and let’s see what it’s in the archive already.
Thanks for reading, liking, commenting, and of course sharing your own collection of history. —@implacable
