This is another flyer for a Rock Angelino fundraising concert with Los Olvidados, Pastilla, and Lil’ Man y Los Gigantes presented by “Mark Torres ’99 Flavors.” The event sought to collect funds to send a 200-person delegation to Chiapas! This was part of the many efforts by LÁ bands and collectives that organized to support the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) and to enact some of the Zapatista collective ideals into local practice. The show took place at the Regeneracion / Popular Resource Center (not to be confused with a BRC at El Pollo Loco digo…) in Highland Park. This venue was created by a collective of Chicanas/os activists, among them Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine. During the 1990s, the PRC or “The Space” was a pivotal location that simultaneously served as an arts space, music venue, and political organizing forum where Rock Angelino, Chicano Groove, and socially conscious bands from a multitude of genres performed. What is also remarkable about this flyer is that the original poster artwork for Luis Buñuel’s film Los Olvidados is used to promote a concert featuring, Los Olvidados, the band that is named after the movie. The PRC was a vital site for both LÁ music and political organizing in a traditionally Latina/o neighbor that is currently besieged by real estate speculators, thus producing displacement of many of its working-class residents and also the erasure of the Latina/o history in the neighborhood. For more information on the history of the site look up “A Brief History of Regeneracion / Popular Resource Center” by one of its co-founders, Victoria Delgadillo.
