- This flyer is for a tocada alternativa…en una yarda trasera in 1992. Or as the South East L.A. connoisseurs would call it, a backyard show! The rock en español/alternative backyard shows in SELA seems were a bit different from the punk and the latter ska shows. Only two or three bands were advertised in the flyer, this as opposed to a marathon line-up. These two to three band line-ups could have also been due to the fact that in the early 1990s, there were really not that many Rock Angelino bands active just yet. This is an interesting flyer artwork as it features an stylized image of Saúl Hernández and the bands announced to play were Los Olvidados, Septimo Sol & Juana La Loca (Pastilla). As a selling point, here was the offering of free beer.
The most interesting feature in this flyer has to be the location map! The “ephemeral forum” or site (probably a house) in Lynwood is plotted out and announced as “a un lado de South Gate,” which denotes how central South Gate was for Rock Angelino and many other Youth Cultures then (1990s) and now. Also, check out that the map lists the usual landmarks: MLK boulevard, Imperial Highway, but the address is a mere two blocks away from the 105 freeway. So why is the 105 not drawn in this map? Well, because the 105 did not yet exist as a functioning route! (it opened in 1993). Do you have pictures/flyers/videos to share? Use the hashtag #rockarchivoLA or tag @RockArchivoLA on the 'gram! Let's continue to grow the collective LÁ music scene(s) archive.
