This is the flyer for the very first Panteón Rococó presentation in Los Angeles, April 2001. The band at the forefront of the Mexican Ska genre first made it to Southern California thanks to Javier Castellanos (from JC Fandango) who was instrumental in these pioneering Panteón Rococó forays in the U.S. Javier fronted the capital for tour expenses and also made sure it was all legit with those work visas for the band. Thus, JC Fandango had the first show on a Thursday. The second show was at The Vault in Pomona produced by @ulises_kalavera and myself. [perdimos $$$, pero como nos divertimos]. The third and final of this SoCal series of performances was produced by yours truly. It was sold-out at The Roxy Theater in Hollywood along with Almalafa, ¡Viva Malpache! La Resistencia, and Left Alone. So why are the Zapatistas in this leaflet? Panteón Rococó has long held the explicit and enduring commitment to Zapatista ideologies both in their lyrics and their own practices as a band. The band’s slogan is “Autonomy, Freedom, and Self-Management,” which mirrors Zapatista egalitarian practices. The fierce EZLN-themed flyer was designed by then CSULA MEChA organizer (now kick-ass museum conservator) Laleña Vellanoweth. At the time, Laleña did plenty of grassroots fundraisers and socially-conscious events within and beyond CSULA, and some ???? graphics for these events. I have to say that even 17 years later, and this is still really good-looking flyer. —@implacable
