The next postings will will focus a central and necessary feature in the flyers before 2010s or so: maps. In here we have a flyer for a “Rock en Español” party or perhaps tocada in July 1993. There was a front part of this flyer that is now lost to history, o sea que se me perdió pues. As you can see this is a very detailed map of Huntington Park drawn by a likely resident of the city and South East L.A. This in an era before GPS apps or the access to satellite produced maps. Hence, people had to resort to their Thomas Guides for maps and their own me on the maps that were a central an necessary feature in the flyers before 2010s or so. Hence, people had to resort to their Thomas Guides for maps and their own mental maps. The creation of these maps can be understood as essential for either recent migrants to LA or U.S. born Latinas/os who moved into H.P. South East Los Angeles. This as the maps created a sense of place and belonging to the area and to identify public spaces and infrastructures (such as streets, freeways) with their radical changes that they were experiencing as part of their migrant experience. This map gives us clues of this. First, in contrast to most maps the cardinal point is the East, not the North. Thus, signaling the significance of East L.A. (perhaps?). Also, look at how the main avenues of SELA are represented: Florence and California Avenues and Firestone boulevard. Plus, the Salt Lake Park is also shown to give a sense of place to the house where the party was held. Y lo más llamativo: ¡la representación del 110 con Rush Hour incluida! Oh also, Bring Drinks y ¡no se te ocurra faltar! ???? How do YOU get around when Waze or Google Maps are not available?????????? #HuntingtonPark #rockenespañol #rockangelino #maps #1993 #rockarchivoLA
