South Gate's own Viernes 13 in one of their very first band photos early 2000s. This is one of V13's earliest line-ups and the photo must have been taken for the band's very first E.P. that was released by S.G. based One Shot Records. Musically, lyrically, visually, and stylistically Viernes 13 defined a certain South East L.A. aesthetic and sound. The V13 members came of age in the streets of South Gate or nearby cities. Thus, their experiences and influences are a blend of recent urban Latina/o immigrant experiences with the old school/veterano life experiences and style elements. Viernes 13's EP was a major revelation: a group of then post-teenagers dressed as rockabillies (with a wardrobe straight from Greenspans' on Tweedy) playing a demonic fast brand of ska, and songs about an urban cowboy that rides lowriders instead of potros, and this tale and all other songs all sung in Spanish! Hence this photo is evidence of the nascent originally and geographical roots of the band (the tracks in SG) that also came to be connected with other S.E.L.A. that crafted a distinct LÁ ska sound and style that has evolved until now. #viernes13 #SouthGate #SouthEastLosAngeles #SELA #OneShotRecords #ska #TheKingsofEvilSka #rockarchivoLA
