Before January ends, here's the flyer for this January 1996 "Roc En Español" gig in "East Los." Yes, "East Los" is in quotes because this is an address in Boyle Heights and we all know the how deep and messy the territorial differences and claims between B.H and E.L.A. Anyhow, it seems like the organizers behind "No Que No" were cool with including a location in Boyle Heights East Los Califas. "NO que N/Calli de Xicano Expression," was a short-lived autonomous space on Whittier boulevard, which sought to create a community-based multimedia center with its own radio and studio. This tocada featuring Las 15 Letras & Los Olvidados was among the several events that were held at the location (which is now a Pentecostal store-front church). However, the barrio was a lot heavier then and from what I remember it, the local gang began to show up around the shows, so it became too hot to do shows there after a couple of month. Yet, the idea and concept of creating community-based multimedia centers in East Los Angeles is something that has been shared, endured, and continues to be realized by different organizations and entities. Among them @radio_espacio_ housed at @espacio1839 on La Primera Street and soon the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory @thebhac will be launchings its own micro radio station staffed by community youth inside the historic Paramount Ballroom on César Chávez Avenue. So be on the lookout for that. #noqueno #boyleheights #eastLos #Califas #las15letras #losolvidados #rockangelino #1996 #rockarchivoLA
