In the wake of the passage of proposition 187 in 1994, numerous community organizations espousing different political stances sprung up in Los Ángeles to counter the xenophobic and racist policies imposed in California. This a flyer for a benefit show for a Youth Center proposed by the The Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade (RCYB). This group being a part of the rather fringe (even in leftist circles) Revolutionary Communist Party USA.
The line-up for this April 1995 show was definitely “rock urbano” heavy with Titanium, Los Hijos de PAncho, Bandera and two bands with the most politically charged names to be remembered: Víctimas del 187 and Todos Somos Marcos (in reference to EZLN’s non-indigenous spokesperson, Subcomandante Marcos). Todos Somos Marcos was a then new multi-ethnic ensemble that fused a vast array of music genres in their sound. After this first show, the band would go on be renamed as Ozomatli, yes that @ozomatli!
Among the many orgs that emerged in the wake of the racial propostions: 187, 209, 227. There were radical groups, community autonomous orgs, then there were more moderate immigrant rights organizations, and others were eventually folded in partisan operations.
While some political groups and actions lasted more than others, the organizing (and radical) legacies continue to inform some bands and organic intellectuals in youth cultures in 2017. Particularly as systemic racism is in full-force at the federal level with el pelos de elote and company. In these challenging, shitty times youth can also find the most courage not only to pushback against oppression, but to imagine, propose and begin to build better liberated futures with more equality. Yes, even when these futures seem unprobable in the present.
