Aztlan Fest had probably two editions in 2000 and 2001. According Mario Cobian its organizer, the festival sought to “promote overlooked Chicano Underground rock and rap genres to young and informed Bilingual and Bicultural Chicano audiences.” The 2001 LA date took place at “the grounds” of The Grand Olympic Auditorium. The same spot as Big Top Locos in 1994. It was an important and well-intended effort that also included the release of a compilation CD as it sought to compare itself to the Watcha Tour. However Aztlan Fest had fewer resources, the stage were smaller and the turn-out was not as strong. The main stage featured Voodoo Glow Skulls, Chencha Berrinches, Las 15 Letras, Union 13, Los Skarnales, Orixa, Caradura, Emaue, and Skalavera. The second stage featured bands such as Los Tumbados, Pro-fe-cia, Schizm, Los Alex (Tijuana), Destruction Made Simple, Flattbush, N.M.E., Rascuache, 3rd Degree Burn and others. There was a third stage dedicated to hip-hop acts. Here are photos of the festival flyer, the Aztlan Fest CD compilation, a festival ticket shared by @ joshuasezrelax and a photo of Schizm’s performance courtesy of the schizo-archives.com. #aztlanfest #downtownlosangeles #downtownla #schizm #grandolympic #rockangelino #rocklatino#rockenespañol #latinalternative#losangeles #2001 #rockarchivoLA
