Dangerous Rhythm(s) Direct from Mexico City! (1983) Ritmo Peligroso (aka Dangerous Rhythm) arguably can be considered the seminal fusion band that provided the inspiration for the creation of what is still the Rock Latino formula: the mixing of mainstream (American/UK) rock and roll with Latin American and Caribbean sounds and themes. Formed in 1978 as an as a punk band singing in English in Mexico City, Dangerous Rhythm’s sound would soon expand to new wave. By the mid 1980s, the band ditched the English name and transformed itself into a decisively Latino influence band with the name Ritmo Peligroso. This led them to travel to San Francisco and perform with Carlos Santana in 1987! At the time, new bands were beginning to gig around DF and really dug Ritmo Peligroso’s previously unheard (and often mocked) sound. This as puritans believed that “rock music” should only sound like straight forward rock and roll and to be sung in English. Among them were Maldita Vecindad and Café Tacuba. By the early 1990s, much of the rock en español, rock latinoamericano — or however one chooses to call it — was based on the fusion of sounds and rhythms that bands like Ritmo Peligroso first pioneered. Nonetheless, Ritmo Peligroso was at the forefront of blending sounds, but also mingling with different people and in different scenes. Here’s a flyer from a show in LA in 1983! Along with Kenny & The Electrics (Kenny & los Eléctricos) another pioneering rock mexicano band fronted by a woman, and a borderlands/Hollywood staple: Felix and the Katz. Long before, LÁ was seen as nucleus for Latina/o music, these bands visited L.Á. in the early 1980s and played alongside Chicano Punk and such as The Plugz, The Illegals, the Brat, etc. Actually, this LA show was produced by Fatima Recordz, the label outfit led by Yolanda Comparan Ferrer, visual artist Richard Duardo, and Tito Larriva, member of The Plugz). Lastly, this has to be one of the oldest flyers (first posted by Piro from RP) oof Mexican Rock bands playing in LÁ. The caveat is that, at the time these still all sang in English… #ritmopeligroso #DangerousRhythm #kenny&theelectrics #FatimaRecordz #rockarchivo
