These were liberatory moments of reclaiming this infamous site by Latina/o Youth for their own autonomous cultural expressions. Particularly as the jail had a long and fraught history of abuse towards Mexican American in L.A. The jail gained a shameful reputation as the detention center where pachucos were incarcerated during the Zoot Suit Riots. Furthermore, in 1951 a group of prisoners (most of them Mexican Americans) were severally beaten without provocation by LAPD officers in an incident known as “Bloody Christmas.” These events were fictionalized in the 1990s novel and film L.A. Confidential.
