Check out this googie/mod inspired flyer by “LPC presents…” This is for a 2002 Huntington Park ska-punk show at “The Family Center” that was housed at a former Elk Lodge site. The $6 show featured Matamoska, Cafeina, That One Band, Stalking Roxy led by a female vocalists, Double Agent, The Vomits. The Family Center was a former Elk’s Lounge hence there was a desiccated elk head hung at the top of the stage. These type of venues (Elks Lodges, Veterans’ Halls, etc, etc) were remnants of the white middle-class residents who lived in South East L.A. until the 1960s when they felt compelled to leave the area as residential segregation was (finally) legally forbidden, thus permitting People of Color into moving into these formerly white-only cities. As a matter of fact, Elks orders were all-white, all male organizations until the late 1970s. Which is ironic considering that LPC was a booking entity led by a young girl from H.P.
