This is a video uploaded by Babasónicos (Argentina) via their own Bultaco Discos. It is a trippy video that sort of chronicles their first time in Los Ángeles when they were recording Dopadromo in 1995. The video is also a visual time capsule of the 1990s LÁ in all its “trasholandia” nitty-gritty.
Since the band lived in LÁ during the recording of the album, they decided to try to book some shows and play for the SoCal audiences. They first performed at JC Fandango (@bearinthepit) which is where most of the footage comes from. They also performed at The Troubadour, but in the first spot at 8pm on a Monday so who knows if anybody saw them there.
Yet, the most extraordinary @babasonicos show at the time happened in South Gate’s own underground Rock Angelino spot, Las Pampas on Firestone boulevard. Mind you, Las Pampas was this dingy restaurant with a one-foot height stage where most Rock Angelino bands made noise through a relic old sound console and two speakers operated by Tucupa from Los Olvidados. In turn the María Fatal fam booked the shows and charged for admission at the door.
Babasónicos showed up to South Gate that Friday in October 1995 in two crammed taxis that surely took them from their residential Hollywood hotel all the way down to S.E.L.A. They were not the current infame/famous Babasónicos. Yet, they at least had one video on MTV Latino, so a few peeps knew them.
After LÁ’s Voz de Mano played, Babasónicos proceeded to set up. ¡Y que se les quema el teclado! This because they didn't have the right current converter (Argentina uses a different electric current to the US.) Nevertheless they stilled played fast and furious set to a crowd that didn’t know much about their music, but got into them quick y hasta se armó el slam. Babasónicos left Las Pampas back in two crammed cars, but surely cheerful to have gotten the rough Las Pampas moshing, even if that mean to have a broken keyboard.
