As we commemorate the East L.A. student walkouts of 1968 this week, let’s examine how Rock Angelino’sMaría Fatal connected the student activism of 1968 with posterior demands for equality for Latinas/os across borders. In their video“Por Ella”(1995) The South Central sextet links the different moments in which youth in both Latin America and Los Angeles took to the street to demand equality. The band related the political actions of Latin Americans with the actions of U.S. Latina/os in the past and the present. The video shows scenes from the 1968 East L.A. student walkouts and the Mexico City’s Tlatelolco march that ended in bloodshed, also in 68. In addition, the video shows scenes from the 1970 Chicano Moratorium march and the 1994 anti-pro. 187 marches in downtown Los Angeles. Thus, Maria Fatal creates a musical, lyrical, and visual bridge between the historic and enduring political demands of Latin American Youth, Latina/ migrants and Chicanas/os.
