This has to be the first ever TV appearance by @chenchaberrinchesoficial in a video from Illegal Interns (shot by Richard Estrada @illegal06) from a July 1997 festival at the Whittier Narrows park that turned to be a watershed show in the REE/Ska scenes. The free festival had originally promised big name acts such as Víctimas del Dr. Cerebro, Maldita Vecindad and La Ley. When the organizers couldn’t book these bands, they turned out to local acts to play instead, yet this was not announced until the day of the show. Hundreds, if not thousands of attendees showed up to the festival and while they never saw the big bands, they got to hear emerging bands such as ¡Viva Malpache! Las 15 Letras, Curanderos and Chencha Berrinches. Their appearance at the festival happened to be one of the first stage shows for the South Gate skapunk band and their graduation from back yard shows. After this festival, Chencha Berrinches’ fame exploded among the SoCal youth for their riotous performances.
