This is the news report on the “Huntington Park Punk Riot” of 1983, in which a scuffle broke out between punk rockers and Huntington Park policers turned into a full-on confrontation on Pacific Boulevard. This as the HP agents (historically notorious for its racist and excessive violence against Latinas/os, blacks and youth) attempted to shut down The Exploited concert taking place inside Mendiola’s Ballroom. The “Huntington Park Riot” is part of the Southern California punk history and it is frequently memorialized in the chronicles of the music genre, particularly nothing the youth angst-ridden and anti-establishment ideology embodied in the participating bands’ message. Nonetheless, what the contemporary and subsequent accounts of the violent episode omit, are the larger racial and economic tensions and demographic transformation that were present in Huntington Park and South East Los Angeles at the time of the event in the 1980s.
