- As mentioned in an earlier post, this weekend we are in Seattle to attend the MoPop Conference. But as luck would have it, as we were landing in Seattle, I turned on my phone to send a text message and…kaput! My formerly trusty Pixel phone decided to die. This is rather apropo as this year's theme for Conference is “music, death, and afterlife.” However, being without a phone while traveling in this day and age is definitely a disorienting experience.
I suppose I could write an extensive essay examining our dependence to be ever-connected, and our blind submission to be guided where to go, to eat, how to connect, and even how and what to see with our phones.
However, since I am here to listen to good panels about music and cultural expressions, I’ll share a great photo taken by @missandreawarner during my participaton on the round table entitled: “Immigrant soundscapes of remembrance, presence, and solidarity.” In it, I got to talk about visual and musical solidarities through the videos of María Fatal and Chicano Batman +Caloncho. It was truly a treat to meet up with complices/colleagues, who made this a fun visit and inspiring collaborative conference. More posts once I get a new phone!
