- "Nacimos en un pais y nos fuimos a otro. Emigramos por que quisimos o porque tuvimos o por que nos obligaron o por que si. Esta es nuestra historia." Huasipungo was a radical hardcore Latino American band based in NYC, which took its name from the quechua to signify the plot of land that indigenous peoples in Ecuador would toil under the plantation-like explotative owner. Along with Chicago’s Los Crudos, Huasipungo were Latina/o/x punk pathbreakers, cantaban en español, denunciaban los sistemas de opresión tanto en EU como en Latinoamérica al tiempo que formaron colectivos de autogestión artistica.
This flyer is from one of their visits to Los Angeles that saw them perform at Luna Sol Café, a radical worker-owned cooperative in front of MacArthur Park that sold sustainable food long before it was cool. Luan Sol also had a ton of events featuring spoken Word, and punk and Chicano Groove bands. Plus, and this is a true story: one day in 2001 Manu Chao stepped out of a taxi with his guitar and into Luna Sol and delivered an impromptu two-hour concert.
Bueno, back to Huasipungo and their 1997 LÁ haunt. At Luna Sol they played along with Profits of Misery, Calavera, Tezacrifico along with socially conscious speakers from P.A.R.T. and Black Star. On Sunday, they played a backyard gig in the San Fernando Valley. “kids, this is a house so behave! They were joined again with Profits of Misery, Bred of Deception, and also another solid LA hardcore band: Kontraattaque. All for $2! Heric Dueñas from Kontraattaque booked and put together these shows. So let’s ask him more about these gigs!
Btw, Huasipungo are still at it, they keep recording and playing, they just don’t tour as much anymore. •
