- This Tuesday for my Mexican American History course, we had the pleasure of being visited by Liliana Macías to discuss her sociology and gender courses at Northeastern Illinois University, her research on Mexican Chicago and her solid and the necessary work she does as a public-engaged scholar and educator at the Chicago History Museum.
It was truly enriching to learn about the ways Prof. Macías shares the extensive —but often unknowledged— history of ethnic Mexicans and Latinas/os/xs in Chicago with multiple audiences of the windy city.
Plus, we got to talk a bit about Rock en Español (or whatever one calls it), because the reason I first got to know Chicago —y por ende, got interested in researching youth cultures— was the organizing of the “tours” (more like weekend-warrior visits) to Chicago with LÁ and Baja California bands to play in Chicago’s then emerging Rock en Español scene of the early 2000s. (See flyer of 2003 Ska Fest with Tokadiscos, Las 15 Letras, and Chencha Berrinches at Chicago’s La Villita neighborhood.) Again, thanks Liliana (and niece) for taking time from your vacay to come talk to us!
