- Güat? It’s already been 25 years since the first Revolución!? Pues eso. Here’s the flyer and ticket for Revolución ’94. This festival led by Caifanes manager Marusa Reyes was conceived with a very important and groundbreaking premise: to include emerging Latin American bands alongside with popular U.S. Alternative bands. It was promised to be the Latino Lollapalooza of sorts for it time.
In the end, Revolución did feature a solid line-up of Mexican rock bands: Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad, La Castañeda & Santa Sabina. However, the first edition generated a buzz based on the rumors of (im) possible headliners (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers!) albeit none of these materialized.
Instead, the festival had to settle for old school SoCal punk outfit Red Kross, the performance by producer Adrian Belew (who produced Santa Sabina’s second album), and then unknown Live (they went to become a pretty popular band in the mid 1990s). While short on recognizable mainstream US bands, Revolución paved the way for the future cross-over festival of sorts.
The poster was created by cartonist Lalo Alcaraz (La Cucaracha) as his former comedy troupe, Chicano Secret Service also performed. Plus, there was an impromptu Chicano Art exhibit in the lobby of the venue that featured artwork by the seminal Chicano art collective Los Four (que en verdad eran cinco, como Los Tres que son cuatro) o sea Carlos Almaraz, Beto de la Rocha (yes, Zack de la Rocha’s father), Judithe Hernández, Gilbert (Magu) Luján, and Frank Romero.
All in all, it was a memorable festival and one of the first ever rock latino concerts at The Universal Amphitheatre. This at a heighten political time, the EZLN uprising had just taken place and the Prop. 187 campaigns were about to be unleashed onto California.
Who went to this Revolución or the succeeding Revolución Tour Dates (like that one with Jaguares and that dude from Manchester…oh yes, Morrissey)?
