One of the most refreshing features of a new music scene is that there is plenty of sound/style explorations, at least in the beginning. Here’s proof of it in a 1997 flyer. This is from a show organized by Gonzalo who was commonly known as “El Gótico” and the twins (I forgot their names). The gig at Las Pampas in South Gate featured Los Olvidados and Chencha Berrinches, two LÁ ska bands (which surely brought most of the crowd), one dark-punk outfit in La Mortal from Orange County and the now mythical Staura from Tijuana. Hence, gatherings like these at some restaurant in South Gate show how youth have connected and exchanged ideas across borders in the past and present, and surely in the future too. Speaking of Tijuana and the LÁ connections, check out the IG account for @tijuana_local This is a archiving and sharing effort, led by Octavio de la Torre, a veteran TJ/SD border musician, who co-founded Mexican Jumping Frijoles and keeps at it with Boulevard Descarga and Los Kung Fu Monkeys. Tijuana Local has been around for a minute on YouTube, but the TJ music archive is FINALLY making it to IG so give it a follow, like now! • ????: de los archivos de @la.skandalosa ¡gracias!
