Ya encarrerados en las conexiones LÁ-TJ aquí esta el flyer de una tocada ¡en 1991! At this time this had to be one of the earliest Rock en Español gigs in LÁ. This happened in the mostly industrial part of Maywood, which is currently neighboring Maywood Elementary School. Talk about environmental (in)justice: schools, next to industrial or areas with a heavy traffic congestion. That is the history of South East LÁ: pollution industries and lax enviromental regulations that harm the health of the residents. Now back to this gig, it was organized by Club Rock en Español and it listed Pieles en Venus de Tijuana. This was an experimental darky, punk at times electronic band that gained a cult status as their members would go on to form other acts such as Iradia and Neo Danza. As the late and sorely missed Tijuana writer, Rafa Saavedra (who coined the “Tijuana Makes Me Happy” phrased) when referring to Pieles en Venus [among other TJ acts] he stated that: “Además de ser la banda sonora de nuestra juventud alternativa, fueron las bandas que iniciaron el éxodo en busca de público y lugares adecuados que hasta el día de hoy el otro rock continúa practicando.” That would have included Pieles en Venus and a plethora of other TJ bands forays to Los Ángeles. Also, look at the detailed hand-drawn map and note that the flyer also doubled as a postcard! This is how the CREE would advertise their events: by sending via postal mail from a South Gate P.O.
