Kurt Cobain recent birthday remembrance also reminds us of the memorable Nirvana performances in Tjuana’s now defunct, but mythic venue Club Iguana's in the early 1990s right before Nirvana went world famous. Here’s a photo of Krist Novoselic, Kurt Cobain, and Dave Grohl with rock critic Octavio Hernández Díaz. “El Groovy” or Octarock was a pivotal figure in rock criticism between Tijuana and Los Angeles, being the co-founder of La Banda Elástica, editor of Retila, collaborator for La Opinión, L.A. Times and in his last decade his own publication TijuaNeo. Octavio always dishing out his encyclopedic music knowledge (and even more amazing adventures) would often remember his meeting with Nirvana as saying that both Krist and Dave were cool as hell and ready to party into the Tijuana night, while Kurt was sullen and moody AF. Octavio passed rather unexpectedly in 2015. While the world would have benefited with many more of his writing, he did published two books: “Tijuana-Mesopotamia, Crónicas y Otros Latidos.” (2000) and “Cornucopia, Periodismo Sonoro y Anexas.” (2012)
