- This week is the 25th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake that affected thousands of Latina/o/x families in Southern California. The aftermath of the earthquake gave way to the recurring instances of apoyo mutuo/solidarity enacted by Rock Angelino bands participants.
As part of their commitment as socially conscious bands several 1990s Rock Angelino bands, often produced and participated in fund-raising events for a variety of causes. In 1994 numerous Rock Angelino acts took part in fundraising events that sought to collect funds and materials for Latina/o families who were affected by the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The solidarity exhibited by the bands who were composed mostly of ethnic Mexican members also had a decisively Pan-Latino metropolitan character that was repeated in later years with fundraisers for the afflicted people in Honduras and Nicaragua after the destruction caused by the Tsunami in 1992 and Hurricane Mitch in 1997. The images in this post include: promo for the Rockaton event held in the City of Cudahy in South East L.A. that included un titipuchal de bandas angelinas y Sergio Arau, the Rockalendario announcement of the benefit shows published in La Opinión. The map of the affected zones in Southern California, and an article also published in La Opinión that detailed how Latina/o/x were not being provided with enough assistance post-earthquake. These are all from the La Opinión archives.
