A Rock en Español tocada at the UCLA campus on a Monday in January? ¡Pues eso es lo que habia en 1992! The flyer quality is definitely bad, but it is quite remarkable that María fatal and Voz de Mano were booked for an event this early in the careers. This had to be one of the first forays by Rock Angelino bands into college campuses and it was significant by the organizers of the shows as demonstrated in the phrase in the middle: “First time at UCLA. Breaking the Barriers!!” Indeed, this show (that was billed as a Rock en Español series ¡en 1992!) was certainly a different genre on campus at the time. What is also remarkable is that it was the Cultural Affairs Commission and Cultural Affairs the college orgs that put this together. This in contrast to later times when more defined Chicana/o and Latina/o/x organizations were the groups who would normally book Rock Angelino, skacore and other Latina/o/x acts to perform at their events. Also, the fact that there is no Latina/o org involved or at least mentioned in the flyer probably alludes to the rather weak institutional presence that Latina/o students (and much less faculty) had at UCLA at the time. The Chicano Studies program was defunded and pretty much left for dead in 1990. These issues would come to the fore, the next year when on May 1993 five students, one professor, and three community members staged a hunger strike to demand proper funding for the program for it to be turned into a formal academic department. This daring, but urgent protest was supported by thousands of community members. The administrator finally agreed on the protestors demands in 1993. This (eventually) led to the creation of the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UCLA that was fully refounded by 2007. The department now has hundreds of undergraduates and a full-fledged Ph.D program with emerging scholars doing some solid work around the Latina/o/x, Chicanx, and the indigenous experience.
