- As y’all might have noticed, the Rock Archivo posts have been scattered this week. It’s been a bit busy around here, as I defended my dissertation and I have now earned my Ph.D!
This is where the personal, academic, and social media labor all intersect. My dissertation, my research deals with Latina/o/x youth cultures as I argue and believe that through the songs, the zines, the flyers, and the perpetual weekend gigs, Latina/o/x youth have claimed themselves as part of Los Angeles and advocated for equality and social justice in the U.S. and Latin America.
The Rock Archivo is the social media platform for some of the material and the historical analysis on Latina/o Youth Culture in Los Angeles in the 1990s and 2000s. But it is also much more than that. It is a collective platform for all of us to re-examine the importance and significance of our cultural expressions, our creativity, and our physical, and spatial presence in Southern California in the present, and in the near and distant past.
Yet, as a historian I study the past, because I am interested in the future. It allows us to see how people have created art, music, spaces, gigs, publications out of practically nothing and in the process, expanded the notion of what we consider was possible. This expansion of the possible is a gift for us and the future us: to create and imagine a future to create new music scenes. Most significantly when we study the past, we can marvel at how what was impossible in the past, then became possible. We have our histories, our art and music, that inspire us to imagine the possibilities to create a new city, a new state, a new nation, and a new world.
Therefore, thanks for being part of this collective effort. For sharing your photos, your flyers, your cassettes, your videos, and your memories. Let’s continue to learn and to share our histories to continue making ourselves, what we are: loud and cool ASF place-makers of Los Angeles!
P.S. these are slides of my presentation, the images also included in the diss. Thanks to Lupe @MapPointz for sharing the last one! —@implacable
