- Exactly 19 years ago I had the dubious privilege of hosting the very last music show inside the Lincoln Heights Old Jail! It has the very first Posada Ecléctica. The Posada Post-Everything. Hey, it was right before Y2K and well we didn’t know we were going to come out alive from it…turns out we did, and Y2K was boring.
Anyhow, I had booked what still looks like a solid line-up. Las 15 Letras, Chencha Berrinches, Caradura (who then became La Peble), Los Rockin’ Babalus and Perfidia from Tecate who never made. Plus there was going to be Tamales, ponche, buñuelos, atole, bolos lucecitas y cuanta cosa pacheca se nos iba ocurriendo. All of this for only $8. Oh and the very cool looking flyer was designed by none other than the (in)famous Mex/US borderland artist Gerardo Yépiz aka @acamonchi.
Unfortunately, it was not to be. Internal strife (beef pues) among different factions within one of the orgs that facilitated the booking of the event —the Aztlán Cultural Arts Foundation— led to the event permits being cancelled without giving us notice. We started the show, there were already a couple of hundred attendees and as in on cue, the LAPD showed up in full force and shut down the Posada ¡Y todavía ni un tamal me había comido! We did a make-up event the following January at East Los El Trópico with almost the same line-up. So, it somehow worked out.
The Posadas then became a yearly thing at other venues, but it would have been good to keep doing this tradition at Old Jail were the Guateques were held, to continue the legacy of these “ephemeral forums.”
