The truth is that as racist and anti-immigrant as the campaign to pass Proposition 187 felt at the time in the 90s (which it was approved by the California voters), that time feels almost quaint, to the open racism of 2016-2018. Yet, it was during that time that Latinas/os, be immigrant of U.S. exactly understood that these were attacks against all of us and created a ton of solidarity actions amongs ourselves. This is evident in this flyer in Spanglish for a Maldita Vecindad concert against Prop. 187 organized by Culture Clash in Huntington Park mere days before the 1994 election. But Prop. 187 passed, Prop. 209 passed in 96 and did away with affirmative action in California. Prop 227 passed in 97 and dismantled bilingual education in schools. Then, after years of losing electorally, people began to register and to vote and these reactory politicans began to lose and by the 2010s no politician in LÁ can dare to try to push an immigrant position. So yes, voting matters as harm reduction and in addition to direct-action, and our mutual support and solidarity in the never-ending struggle for our equality and dignity.
