- Following up with the "Rock sin Fronteras" Festival, here is the flyer/poster artwork and the L.A. Times write-up. Caifanes gets a shout out and their photo included in the Calendar. Let's remember, that this was 1990! So this was a huge deal as Latin American rock bands were completely unknown in the US at the time.
Regretfully, the festival was too ambitious and several of the bands announced did not perform. Seems like the acts that ended up showing up were:El Tri, Kenny & Los Eléctricos, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and the local bands (Feel-ix & L.A. Mixers). While it was likely not a profitable event, the intent of the event was quite forward-looking and even radical. It was advertised as a fundraiser to benefit the AIDS healthcare foundation. This at a time of the full AIDS crisis, when the US federal government reeked of homophobia and intolerance against queer people affected by the virus.
Plus, we also have to admit our own homophonic prejudices within Latina/o/x communities. Yet, this event also demonstrate the long history of more inclusive and proactive actions towards gay folks with Latina/o youth culture. October 1990
