"El lugar chido para mi y mis friends" This was the motto of the Turn Off The Radio nights. In the mid to late aughts (between 2006 and 2009) a segment of "the Latina/o scene" morphed from live shows into music happenings. These music nights blended cool fashion by the attendees and fresh music from Latin America played by DJs. While Nacotheque had been a trailblazer in Los Nuyores, Turn Off the Radio (TOTR) was at the forefront of these happenings in LÁ. This was a logical evolution as many of the bands whose songs were played at TOTR were not always able to perform in the US due to the high cost involved in bringing an upcoming band, in addition to the more stringent work visa requirements placed on artists after 9/11. Each TOTR night featured a theme that was prepared for months, including a photo session with models whose images were plastered in the flyers and the then premier social network, MySpace. Led by Luz Cortez and Mélissa Garnica, TOTR also counted on DJ Santi as the resident and lead DJ. TOTR nights were at some key venues in Echo Park and Downtown Los Angeles. This had to be one of the last TOTR nights before the organizers decided to move on to other projects. Other music themed nights such as Automático and Mucho Wednesdays continued and solidified into the "happening nights" well into the second decade of the 21st century. Thus Summer 2008 happening featured a performance by Astra Heights (¿?). Also, this was the summer before the financial crisis of 2008. ???? Did you go to any of these events TOTR, Automático, Mucho? ???????????????????
