- As it is evident from these recent posts, these flyers are from a batch from 1994-1995. In these flyers we can chart out the growth and massification of many Latina/o music genres, whose artists move from performing in venues located in predominantly Latina/o ‘hoods to being booked for the first time in the prominent Los Angeles and Hollywood venues.
For instance, yes, Chente and la Trevi went from performing at the Pico Rivera Es Pura Arena, I mean Sports Arena or radio festivals in Whittier to headline the Universal Amphitheater. This is a rather remarkable time, as Latinas/os as taking space as performers and attendees in mainstream venues, while simultaneously the campaign to approve, the anti-immigrant Proposition 187 was in full force. Coincidence? Not really.
Parallel to these mid 1990s Universal Amphitheater shows, The Hollywood Palace became the host of a ton of Rock en Español concerts, produced by Kiko Vargas Jr. For a time, Kiko even had a Rock en Español dedicated store in front of The Palace!
Here’s the flyer for pre-thanksgiving 1995 show with Café Tacuba & Víctimas del Dr. Cerebro. ¡Vean nomás la cara de chavitos de los tacvbos! ???????????????????????????????? •
