- This is a photo of The Sirens from Highland Park performing at ELAC in the 2000s. This image was part of the exhibit “Vexing: Female Voices from East LA Punk.” This exhibition was co-curated by Pilar Tompkins Rivas —now director of the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) at ELAC— and Colin Gunckel (University of Michigan). The exhibit was presented at the Claremont Museum of Art in 2008 and it later traveled to Guadalajara and Boston.
The exhibit took its name from the all-ages music club The Vex, once housed within East Los Angeles’ Self Help Graphics and Art. Vexing was a historical investigation of the women who were (and are) at the forefront of this movement of experimentation in music, art, culture and politics, while exploring their lasting legacies and contemporary practices. Hence the inclusion of this photo taken by Chris Valles that highlighted the then, contemporary female-led bands of the late 2000s in LÁ.
You can still find info and images from this seminal exhibit online. ????: @cvalles1989 thanks for sharing!
