- Edgar Briones in his bedroom in Echo Park posing for the Las 15 Letras artwork of their debut album, “Golosinas.” 1997. Edgar was a precocious teenager when he joined his older brother’s band, Las 15 Letras, becoming one of the first brass musicians (along with José Vergara from Los Olvidados) in the rock Angelino scene.
The inclusion of brass instruments by Las 15 Letras & Los Olvidados, plus their affiliation to ska, polka, and other wind-friendly music genre would prove seminal as it provided a model for the future of LÁ bands, particularly ska/punk acts. Many of the trumpet, sax, and trombone players first learned to play these intruments in the same way that Edgar and José did: being part of the LAUSD High School marching bands. ¿O no?
