- Soooo….what do Andre the Giant, Frank Sinatra and El Tri have in common?
They all performed at the Olympic Auditorium!
For much of the 20th century, the now 93 year old building was Los Angeles biggest and most populist venue as it hosted boxing (of course) and wrestling that attraced a sizable Mexican-American audience, and a ton of concerts. In the 1980s the Olympic was the site for some of the most (in)famous punk rock concerts.
In the 1990s, the Olympic hosted some memorable Rock en Español shows like Soda Stereo (1996) and earlier in the decade this 1994 El Tri concert celebrando 25 años de rock and roll. (Now Alexora is celebrating 50!). Once this show ended, the trisoleros and other rockeros urbanos (or urbanxs to keep up with the times) we given a farewell by a full line of LAPD’s cops posted outside along 18th Street. O sea ¡Ya lléguenle chavos!
As a entertainment venue, the Olympic closed down in the 2000s and it is now a Korean evangelical church. ????????
