- This for "Día Los Muertos 2000." At East Los Ángeles College. This is the first time I have seen this flyer. This was the Self-Help Graphics Day of the Dead annual celebration that has been taking place since the 1970s. Seems like in the 2000, BOCA magazine co-organized the event and produced a pretty neat festival headlined by Maldita Vecindad. The flyer lists all the "Chicano Groove" bands of the time: Aztlán Underground, Slowrider, East L.A. Sabor Factor, Subsistencia, a rad women-fronted hardcore trio. You can find their songs on YouTube. Plus, Las 15 Letras and Little Man & The Giants.
FYI: BOCA Magazine was part of the wave of Latina/o independent publications that emerged in Southern California in the second part of the 1990s. The development of Latina/o oriented publications continued and we can say it reached its peak and subsequent decline with Tu Ciudad Magazine (2004-2008).
BOCA advertised itself as "the true alternative voice of Latinos in L.A. BOCA is read predominantly by college-educated Raza because it speaks to their experiences growing up and living in Southern California." ??
Now, back to the concert: did the line-up stayed the same? Did Maldita actually played at ELAC in 2000? So many questions. ????
Anyhow, a portion of the proceeds benefited Xicano Records and Film, Self-Help Graphics and ELAC.
Thanks to @mozfoelife for sharing this flyer, which had been glued to her phone book all these years! ????
