- “I study history… because I am interested in the future.” The importance of learning from the past, is not just for the sake of nostalgia or reliving memories (which hey, some can be good, others plain awful). What is critical about the study of the past, be in a book or from sources like flyers, songs, videos, artworks, and other cultural products, is that we learn how people in the near past have created music, places, art and relationships among each other. Sometimes even in the most adverse conditions. (Admist racism, sexism, police brutality, societal rejection, poverty, violence, drugs, beef among ourselves, etc.) We all create history/herstory, but not in the conditions of our choosing.
Learning from the past also helps us envision how we can do new or even still unimaginable things in the present and future. It helps us understand that whatever has been deemed impossible once, then —with a ton of work— became possible. Most significantly, it can encourage us to form new bands, compose new music, create original art, enjoy and support new spots, and make new relationships with the squad. @implacable [artwork by #ricardolevinsmorales] #IstudyhistorybecauseIaminterestedinthefuture #rockarchivo
