- This LÁ 1990s Zine entitled “Perdidos en la Línea” was quite a mess, but a rather remarkable and well-designed mess. The title was a reference to the line of Soda Stereo’s "Paseando Por Roma" song and it referenced the-then emerging interconnected among Latin Americans de aquí y allá through internet culture.
The ‘zine featured articles on music, film, short stories, and plenty of satirical and sarcastic humor. The contributors were members of Rock Angelino bands such as Las 15 Letras, Los Olvidados (Jorge Infante and José Ska did most of the zine’s design) along with then college students in Southern California campuses. As an example, the short piece titled “La Tamalera” by Irene Esquivel that highlights the dignity of the la señora que vende tamales in Los Angeles neighborhoods amidst the velied racists attacks by then California Governor Pete Wilson and supporters of Prop. 187.
In addition, Tijuana based writers and artists Rafa Saavedra, Octavio Hernández (both who have passed on way too young in the last decade), along with Gerardo Yépiz contribute their texts and artwork.
How do I know all this? Because I was the editor of it! ???? I admit that I had not seen or read this issue, until I recently scanned it. While at first, I blushed for the youthful irreverent tone of some of the articles, most of the pieces and the designs still look 100%. Anyhow, the last issue of Perdidos en la Línea came out in late 1998 as I transitioned into putting on shows and I didn’t want to be “biased” in the music section of the zine o algo así. —@implacable
